BAPTISM
LOOKING TO TAKE THE NEXT STEP? HERE ARE SOME RESOURCES TO HELP YOU.
What is baptism?
Baptism is our response to God’s grace and love toward us. It is an outward declaration of an inward transformation that has already taken place through personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Baptism is a public moment where we declare to the world that we have chosen to follow Jesus.
Baptism is similar to a wedding ring. A ring does not make someone married, but it is a powerful symbol of a covenant that already exists. In the same way, baptism does not save us, but it visibly represents the commitment we have made to Jesus. It invites the church community to celebrate what God has done in your life and to support you as you follow Christ (Acts 16:31–34).
The New Testament is clear that salvation comes by grace through faith alone. Baptism is a symbol of salvation—it does not produce it. Salvation always comes first and is never dependent on baptism (Ephesians 2:8–9).
Why should I be baptized?
Jesus commanded His followers to be baptized, making baptism an act of obedience and surrender to God. Jesus Himself was baptized, identifying with humanity and giving baptism deep spiritual significance (Matthew 28:19–20; Mark 1:9).
Every person who has placed their faith in Jesus Christ is called to be baptized (Acts 2:36–41). Baptism is for believers and is an expression of trust in the person and work of Jesus Christ.
Obedience to Jesus demonstrates that we truly know and follow Him (1 John 2:3). Baptism is a public way of saying, “I’m turning from my old life and trusting Jesus to transform me” (Acts 2:38–41).
When is the best time to be baptized?
The only requirement for baptism is faith in Jesus Christ—believing that He is the Son of God, that He died for your sins, and that He rose again—and surrendering your life to Him (Acts 2:41). If you have decided to follow Jesus, you are ready to be baptized (Acts 8:12).
Why do we baptize by immersion?
Jesus was baptized by being immersed in water (Matthew 3:16; Mark 1:10). Immersion powerfully symbolizes what has happened spiritually: our old life has died and been buried, and we have been raised to new life in Christ (Romans 6:3–5).
Going under the water represents burial with Christ. Rising out of the water represents resurrection—new life, new identity, and new purpose as part of God’s family and co-heirs with Christ (1 Corinthians 15:3–4).
Do you baptize children?
Yes, when a child can personally express faith in Jesus Christ and understands the meaning of baptism (Romans 10:9; Acts 10:47–48). While parents play a vital role in teaching and modeling faith, baptism is a personal decision each child must make for themselves.
What is said during the baptism?
You will first be asked, “Who is your Lord and Savior?” You respond, “Jesus Christ” (Acts 4:11–12). Then, you will hear, “I baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19).
Do I need to be baptized again?
We encourage baptism by immersion after someone has personally placed their faith in Jesus Christ. If you were baptized as an infant or before you understood the meaning of baptism, being baptized again can be a meaningful step of obedience and personal faith.
If you were baptized after trusting Jesus but have since struggled or drifted, you do not need to be baptized again. Instead, we encourage you to reconnect with biblical community and focus on growing in your relationship with God.
Who can baptize me?
Anyone who is a follower of Jesus and has been baptized themselves—whether a pastor, family member, friend, or ministry leader.
