be fruitful or die
One of my greatest fears in life is not living up to my potential. Dying and then God showing me all that he had in store for me that I forfeited because of fear or disobedience. That's the kind of hear that Jesus addresses in Mark 4:18 that is unfruitful.
What makes this condition so dangerous is that it doesn’t always look bad on the outside. Jesus describes people who hear the word of God. They attend, listen, learn, and even grow for a time. But slowly, other things begin to take over. The cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desire for other things creep in and choke the word until it becomes unfruitful.
That image stops me dead in my tracks. A plant being choked still looks alive for a while. It may still have color. It may still stand upright. But underneath, life is being restricted. Growth is being suffocated. Seeds are being hindered.
Many believers live this way spiritually. Busy schedules, financial pressure, comfort, approval, success, entertainment, and personal ambition slowly crowd out intimacy with God. We can become so consumed with maintaining life that we stop cultivating our hearts. The tragedy is not just that we become distracted. The tragedy is that we stop short of the fruitfulness God intended for us.
Jesus did not save you merely to survive spiritually. He desires for your life to bear fruit that impacts others. Love that overflows. Faith that perseveres. Obedience that honors Him. Peace in trials. Generosity. Boldness. Compassion. A life transformed by His word.
The good news is that hearts can be tended. Thorns can be removed. The Holy Spirit is able to expose what is choking your faith and restore what has been neglected.
So do not settle for a faith that only looks alive on the outside. Press deeper into God. Make room for His word to take root fully. The Lord has more for you than spiritual survival. He desires spiritual fruitfulness.
